"Teaching Students Conflict Resolution Skills " course #CIC-587G This is a three semester hour graduate course. This workshop presents participants with a comprehensive approach to the creation of a safe, caring community. The course details the steps of training elementary and secondary school students how to mediate and resolve their interpersonal conflicts in a peaceful manner. This workshop assumes that all students in a school need to be taught mediation skills, and that some students will be motivated to volunteer when opportunities to put these skills into practice are offered. The course is especially helpful to those who have taken "Teacher Effectiveness." This course will:

• Provide a comprehensive model on how to reduce school violence

• Detail the part that can be played by parents, staff, students and the   community to reduce violence

• Demonstrate the use of role playing and "academic controversies" in   teaching conflict resolution skills

• Provide teachers with skills they can use in all parts of their lives to   resolve conflicts in a "win-win" manner

• Show how to create a "conflict positive" climate

• Detail the reasons that most conflict resolution programs fail

• Define the steps to a sucessful conflict resolution program

• Help teachers develop a climate where teachers and students work   together to improve the classroom
